Railfuture's 2019 Summer Conference at the Dolphin Centre, Darlington, on Saturday 22nd June had five speakers.
Alan Williams is Chairman of the Esk Valley Railway Community Rail Partnership and a Vice President of Railfuture.
He is a journalist and writer, probably best known for his sometimes acerbic monthly political column in Modern Railways magazine.
He has worked as a transport specialist at the BBC and as communications advisor at both the Treasury and the Department for Trade and Industry, and during a secondment to 10 Downing Street.
Prior to privatisation he was an Executive Board Member of The Post Office Corporation and a Member of the British Railways Board Design Panel from 1983 to 1994.
He is an Associate of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers.
And for recreation he has a passenger carrying miniature railway running around his farmhouse in North Yorkshire...
With a career in the UK ports industry spanning almost thirty years, Matthew Hunt has now held senior management positions at the north east Ports of Seaham, Tyne and for the last nine years at the Port of Sunderland, as Port Director. This period has been one of significant change and opportunity for the industry and this has reflected in developments at each, as declining traditional core trades have been replaced with those from emerging markets.
Matthew is passionate about rail and specifically the development of rail freight opportunities. Throughput his career he has demonstrated the delivery of significant rail freight projects working alongside partners such as the Rail Freight Operating Companies and Network Rail and there are now clear opportunities for the Port of Sunderland to establish a presence as a multi-modal operator here in the north east.
Tim joined Hitachi Rail in 2017 as Head of Technical Services for manufacturing.
An experienced Chartered Mechanical Engineer and qualified Project Manager, Tim has previously held senior positions at Reece Group and BAE Systems.
His wealth of experience from different industries, together with his passion for manufacturing, business improvement, sales and project management, means he is able to strategically steer the Newton Aycliffe facility towards continuous improvement and growth.
Tim is passionate about north east manufacturing enjoying applying his previous experience into the rail industry. His family are currently learning more about train building than they ever thought they wanted to know!
Philip Meikle joined Nexus from Cross Country Trains in 2017 with more than 20 years' experience in the rail industry and with the Department for Transport (DfT).
Philip, of Whitley Bay, will leads a team shaping the future of transport in North East England, including making the case to fund extensions and improvements to Metro and local rail services.
