Press release 26th October 2018

Rail campaigners welcome the start of tram trains in Yorkshire.

Railfuture director Ian Brown CBE FCILT said: “We’re delighted to witness the introduction of accessible tram train service from Rotherham into and through Sheffield City Centre. The business case is about regeneration, so for future campaigning it will be important to see how ridership builds up and particularly how Rotherham and the development at Parkside benefit from the new link, economically and socially.

Bridging the gap between light rail and main line railway technologies has not been easy, nor cheap as we have seen. As with all innovative projects, this investment in learning must be built upon to extend the reach of our main line network, better penetrating population centres.

Railfuture will vigorously campaign for properly integrated fares sothat people outside this immediate operation can benefit from this investment.”
