Public services began on Saturday 1st August. It had been under detailed consideration since January 2018, with two preferred options identified in April 2018. Based on a bid agreed in April 2022 by West Devon Borough Council to the Levelling Up Fund's Tranche 2, Devon County Council announced in May that Okehampton East / Parkway was part of a £92million package bid to the Levelling-Up Fund. The Department for Levelling-Up, Housing & Communities announcement on 18 January 2023 was confirmed by Network Rail and GWR.

Exeter to Okehampton via Crediton: regular alternate-hourly services were restored to the newly-named Dartmoor line from Saturday 20 November 2021, as part of the Devon Metro and the first reopening to be completed by the Restoring Your Railway initiative. The service became hourly from May 2022.

Golborne (between Wigan North Western and Warrington Bank Quay) secured Transforming Cities Fund support in early-2021. Its predecessor Golborne South closed to passengers in February 1961. Transport for Greater Manchester consulted from 4 January 2024 then in November 2024 submitted a planning application, which was granted on 1st May 2025.
