Mail by rail

Railfuture was cheered by news in June 2007 that some mail will continue to go by rail, thanks to a deal between GBRailfreight and the Royal Mail.

Railfuture has been campaigning for the return of mail to rail since the service was threatened three years ago.

In the latest three-year deal mail trains will operate between London, Warrington and Glasgow.

"We have worked hard at ensuring our service levels are exemplary," said GBRf's managing director John Smith.

"There is a real opportunity to secure more Royal Mail traffic back to rail."

GBRailfreight also delivers a million tonnes of coal a year from the Port of Tyne to Drax power station in North Yorkshire and .8million tonnes of coal from Hull to Cottam and West Burton power stations in Nottinghamshire.
