The East London line took a major step forward on Saturday 29 March 2008 when a new railway bridge was lifted into position across Shoreditch High Street, using Britain's biggest mobile crane.

The 350-tonne bow-string bridge is a key part of the £1billion programme to upgrade the existing East London line so it can reopen in two years time from West Croydon to Dalston Junction on the North London line.

A new viaduct and new station are still under construction at Shoreditch.

In May, a flyover will be put into place at New Cross Gate flyover and a bridge over the Great Eastern main line near Brick Lane.

By June 2010, the northern extension to Dalston should be complete, with new step-free stations at Dalston, Haggerston, Hoxton and Shoreditch.

The southern extension to New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon should also be finished by then.

It is also hoped that by February 2011, there will be an extension from Dalston Junction to Highbury & Islington.

The Shoreditch bridge was manufactured at Fairfield Mabey's workshops in Chepstow, and put together in Shoreditch.
