New signals have been installed and are now in operation on the rail line near Corby, one year after the town’s new station opened.

It will mean that the new rail service to the town – which suffered a 22-year period with no passenger trains – can be improved and extended.

Rail campaigners are pleased that the signalling has been improved but saddened that Network Rail has installed some of the new signals where it was hoped a second track could be laid.

Campaigners had made clear to NR that reinstating the second line would have been another major step forward in increasing capacity for both passenger and freight trains.

Work on installing the five new signals started in January and were commissioned on 1 March.

The signals should eliminate the need for passenger trains to retire into the siding after arrival at Corby to clear the line.
