The Northamptonshire town of Corby rejoined the national rail network only three years ago but is seeing another big rise in passenger numbers.

It is understood pasenger growth is up 20% at Corby, way above the national average.

Railfuture member David Fursdon said he was not surpised at the big jump in passengers using the service.

Corby station is a major asset to the town and is helping in regeneration.

Commuters and leisure travellers have contributed to making Corby station successful.

Usage would be even higher if there was improved morthbound connections at Kettering, added Mr Fursdon.

Passenger numbers have been helped by the average journey time of one hour 10 minutes from Corby to London and the recently refurbished trains on the route.

The Corby station cafe Loco Coco is also reporting increased business providing a welcome service to rail users.

Better access for foot passengers between the railway station and town centre will be provided when the Corby Walk is extended via a footbridge into the station forecourt.

A Government announcement is expected in July whether the go ahead is given to the electrification of the Midland main line to serve Corby along with Kettering and Wellingborough.

All passenger services to and from Corby are operated by East Midlands Trains and provide an excellent link to London St Pancras International.

Corby station was offically opened on 27 April 2009.
