The cuts protestors targeted high rail fares as a big issue

High rail fares were just one of many issues under the spotlight today (20 October 2012) when an estimated 150,000 people took to the streets of London to protest about Government cuts.

Members of the TSSA rail union were among the marchers who were so numerous that it took four hours to reach the the Trades Union Congress rally in Hyde Park, addressed by Labour leader Ed Milliband. Rallies also took place in Glasgow and Belfast.

The TSSA said that the railways are at real risk of becoming the “rich man’s toy” that Tory ministers have talked about.

As an interim measure the TSSA is calling on the coalition government to implement the policy the Lib Dems fought the election on – for fares to be adjusted by 1% less than inflation every year.

The TSSA marchers also handed out leaflets warning that hundreds of rail stations are at risk of cuts following the 2011 report by Sir Roy McNulty which some train operators are already implementing.
