This humble building is part of a programme to bring destaffed stations in Wales back to life. The idea to instal a “hub” at Llandeilo on the Heart of Wales line is part of a plan to strengthen the links between railway and community, with the aim of boosting both tourism and rural regeneration.

The Heart of Wales line runs for 120 miles between Swansea and Shrewsbury through stunning scenery and is a popular tourist destination in its own right. In the past, its stations were gateways to towns and also attracted local businesses, but over the years have lost their staff and in some cases their buildings too.

So designers have produced a 6 metre by 3 metre transportable building made from sustainably sourced Welsh wood with a compost toilet. The building is well insulated, robust and secure and will have full access for the disabled. It is designed for community and local business use.

It was installed this month at Llandeilo and will be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings. The official launch takes place next month, giving time for carpets, wifi and other details to be fitted.

Possible uses include local/organic food distribution, an office workspace, plus a local tourism initiative to provide day trips and mini breaks from the station. Cycle and walking maps and facilities will be another big focus.

The hub has been designed and built by David Bamford of Bamford Makers, Presteigne, and funded by the Welsh Government, thanks to Economy and Transport Minister Edwina Hart. The project was commissioned by the Heart of Wales Line Development Company.
