The card would be a win for the passenger, the train operating companies, the SRA and the Government, because it would provide lower off-peak fares, boost revenue and reduce the cost of subsidy (per passenger mile).

A report showing how successful the card would be was launched at London Liverpool Street station today, jointly by Railfuture and the Rail Passengers Council.

Railfuture chairman Peter Lawrence said there was much talk in the industry about the new franchises being value for money.

We at Railfuture are calling for value for money for the passengers, he said.

RPC national chairman Anthony Smith said the card would help solve the problem of high walk-on fares.

He said that if a passenger went to London Euston station and wanted to buy a return ticket for that day’s travel to Manchester, he would have to pay £160.

The national railcard would provide a cheaper alternative for walk-on tickets.

RPC chairman Stewart Francis said: The National Railcard will bring increased benefits to pasengers, driving down the cost of off-peak fares.

We want to stimulate real debate within the industry. The National railcard can be a win-win product - less social exclusion, less taxpeyer subsidy, better value fares and more train operator income.

Let us all see how we can make the National Railcard happen.

MP Jeremy Corbyn who attended the launch said he would be asking questions in Parliament to encourage the Government to support the card.

Front cover of Railfuture's National Railcard campaign leaflet from 2003, which promoted the introduction of a network-wide railcard to give discounts on off-peak trains. The use of the Union Flag caused a small number of people to complain that it looked more like a 'National Front' leaflet if not read properly - a lesson learned by Railfuture
