Franchising

DfT new
On Monday 23 March 2020 all DfT franchise operators transfered to Emergency Measures Agreements for six months.
On Monday 21 September 2020 they were replaced with Emergency Recovery Measures Agreements (ERMAs) for up to a further 18 months.

Summary of current re-franchising

London North Eastern Railway, successor to the Virgin Trains East Coast franchise whose termination was announced on 16 May 2018, commenced under DfT Operator of Last Resort Holdings Ltd on 24 June 2018. On 26 June 2020 it was given a second Direct Award, for three years and extendable by up to two years, to continue operations beyond its first expiry date on 28 June 2020.
Cross Country refranchising was halted 20 September 2018, pending rail review. February 2020 DfT confirms franchise extended to October 2020, with funding for longer trains starting May 2020; October 2020 contract extended to October 2023.
Great Western on 30 March 2020 First Group was granted a new Direct Award for three years, extendable to four.
South Eastern on 30 March 2020 Govia was granted a new Direct Award until 16 October 2021, extendable to 31 March 2022. On 28 September 2021 the extension option was foregone in favour of DfT's Operator of Last Resort Holdings Ltd from 17 October 2021.

December 2019

8 December 2019. Sunday. Virgin Trains West Coast franchise ended; West Coast Rail: West Coast Partnership new First/Trenitalia franchise commenced, until December 2031 and extendable to December 2034.

February 2020

CrossCountry.png
~ Arriva CrossCountry Direct Award was due to end (extension by 4 additional reporting periods from October 2019, further 9 additional reporting periods extension available at Transport Secretary's discretion). Then refranchising was halted 20 September 2018, pending rail review. In February 2020 DfT confirmed franchise extended to October 2020, with funding for longer trains starting May 2020, then in October 2020 contract extended extended again to October 2023.

1 March 2020. Sunday. Northern Trains Ltd, subsidiary of DfT OLR Holdings Ltd, began operation of former Northern franchise.

Great Western Railway Direct Award due to end (13 additional 'reporting periods' extension assumed). On 30 March 2020 First Group was granted a new Direct Award for 3 years, extendable to 4.
Southeastern
Southeastern Direct Award due to end. See Southeastern, and then on 30 March 2020 the DfT granted Govia a further Direct Award to continue operating Southeastern until 16 October 2021, potentially extendable to 31 March 2022, but on 28 September 2021 the extension option was foregone in favour of DfT's Operator of Last Resort Holdings Ltd from 17 October 2021.

~ 25 December-3 January - Services suspended between London Victoria and East Croydon for major resignalling project. REMINDER-1 and REMINDER-2.
~ 27-29 December - Northern City Line services to / from Finsbury Park diverted from Moorgate to London King's Cross for track and signalling works.
~ 27 December - 3 January - services amended via Lewisham for track and signalling works.
~ 27 December-4 January - reduced services between London St. Pancras and Kentish Town for final stage of trackworks.
~ 4-12 January - services diverted between Milton Keynes and Rugby, via Northampton, for flood prevention works.
~ 15/16 January, 12/13, 19-27 February, 5/6 March, 3 April 2022 - services suspended between Brighton / Hove / Lewes and Three Bridges for full line closure to allow Network Rail to replace 1980s track at Copyhold junction (near Haywards Heath) and at Burgess Hill; a new underpass to provide safe access under the railway at Hassocks will also be built.
