Walkers and cyclists will be out on Saturday 19 July 2008 to highlight the need to reopen the Uckfield-Lewes line in Sussex.

The day before the event, there could be a crucial announcement about whether there is a business case for reopening.

A decision was delayed twice – in May and again in June – after Network Rail presented its report to the Central Rail Corridor Board meeting with additional information from consultants Mott MacDonald.

Rebuilding Uckfield-Lewes would recreate a third main line to the Sussex coast relieving the London-Brighton main line.

The Central Rail Corridor Board members comprise representatives from East Sussex County Council, Wealden District Council, Lewes District Council, South East England Development Agency, South East England Regional Assembly and Charles Hendry MP and Norman Baker MP.

Representatives from Uckfield, Lewes and Crowborough Town Councils and Lewes and Wealden parish councils attend as observers.
