Trams returned to Oldham this week, 66 years after the town lost its former tram service.

Metrolink trams began running again between Manchester and Oldham Mumps on Wednesday 13 June 2012.

Trams run every 12 minutes at present but a six-minute frequency will be introduced as passenger numbers grow, said Transport for Greater Manchester.

The trams are operating over the former British Rail Oldham Loop line which closed three years ago to allow it to be converted for tram use.

The former stations at Mumps, Hollinwood, Failsworth and Newton Heath and Moston have now reopened along with new stops at Monsall, Central Park, Freehold and South Chadderton.

Oldham council leader Jim McMahon said: "This is the biggest infrastructure project ever undertaken here and we believe it will act as a catalyst to create new jobs and opportunities.”

Work continues on a loop into Oldham town centre which will open in 2014.
The Metrolink line is expected to be extended to reach Rochdale by the end of 2012 and into Rochdale town centre by 2014.
