More children will suffer breathing difficulties as a result of the Government's decision to press ahead with the widening of the M1 motorway.

The Department for Transport is planning to spend more than £3billion on widening the road, but is disguising the cost by doing the job in separate sections. In addition, bear in mind that road projects frequently exceed their estimates by a factor of three.

But while it is opening the way for more cars and more pollution which will degrade living conditions, the DfT is still keeping the £3.5billion Thameslink rail project waiting for funding after many years.

The plans can be viewed at the Highways Agency offices in Bedford and in May and June

Protesters have a chance to object to the M1 scheme following the DfT's announcement on 29 March 2007 of "public consultation" into the Bedfordshire section – which will cost £40million per mile just to add an extra lane.

there will be public exhibitions held in Luton, Harlington, Flitwick and Toddington.

The Thameslink programme will make life better for millions of people. It will enhance the rail network to and through London, delivering clear and tangible benefits.
