British rail experts are being lured to jobs in foreign countries because of soaring demand for rail services throughout the world.

The record numbers of people using British trains has been noted by opinion makers abroad who are already expanding rail services to cope with climate change and increased road pollution.

“The success in the UK has seen countries such as Australia and Dubai remodel their public transport offerings and implement huge changes in their rail industries,” said Lee Cowap, a senior transportation consultant.

“The move has made available a wide variety of career opportunities for some UK-based transportation groups.

“There has been an increase in UK-based companies bidding for contracts abroad resulting in some of the top talent in the UK being sent overseas to help win contracts.”

Mr Cowap, who works for recruitment agency the Interim Register, said there is “the potential for the UK to lose some of its best rail experts”.

He added: “The UK rail industry needs to ensure it can retain the skills within the sector to guarantee that key roles are filled with the best possible people.

"The increased use of rail transport vs cars is good for the environment and
many people will welcome the changes being introduced in the countries
mentioned.

"It's now an interesting challenge for the UK rail industry to
continue to progress and to keep its rail professionals here, as well as provide
direction in an industry of which it was once the world's pioneer."”
