Manchester's Metrolink network grew this month with the opening on 7 July 2011 of the extension to Chorlton, south the city.

Many passengers found that their journey time had been dramatically cut from an hour to around 20 minutes.

The new route is part of £1.4 billion "big bang" Metrolink expansion across Greater Manchester.

The extension north from the city centre to Oldham Mumps is expected to open in March.

Cash for the project was initially offered by the Labour government but was withdrawn in 2004.

The money for a smaller "little bang" was reinstated after a regional campaign.

Council bosses across the region subsequently put together a funding package to make sure the full "big bang" goes ahead.

"This £1.4 billion expansion is the single biggest investment in public transport outside of London," said Councillor Andrew Fender, chairman of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee.

Services run every 12-15 minutes between 06.00 and 23.45pm Monday to Thursday, 06.00 and 00.45 Friday and Saturday, and 09.00 to 22.45 on Sundays.
