Artists have taken over a room on Hackney Downs station and made it into an exhibition space called Banner Repeater.

There is also a reading room which holds a collection of artists’ books and other printed material, for both browsing and purchase.

The project is supported for the first year by Hackney Council's Empty Shop Fund, and Arts Council England although the project is expected to run for 3 years.

The Guardian’s city guide said: “Need to kill time while waiting for a train? Search out Banner Repeater on platform one of Hackney Downs station and be bored no more.

“This innovative rush-hour haven should spawn a slew of art spaces in unexpected everyday environs.

"It's an intimate gallery with a library trolley outside and a reading room attached, but it instantly breaks down the barrier that can make wandering into an official art gallery daunting.

“Banner Repeater is artist-run by Ami Clarke.”

Another commentator said: “Every train station should have a gallery in it. Like all good ideas, it seems obvious once you think of it.

“There are ongoing attempts to make certain stations places to view art, but I have yet to find one that strikes quite the balance as the project space at Hackney Downs.”
