The equivalent of 60 classroooms full of children were killed or seriously injured last year on the streets of Britain.

That is why Living Streets is campaigning for a 20 mph speed limit in towns and cities.

“Reducing traffic speeds on our streets is the single biggest measure that will make them safe, vibrant and social places,” says Living Streets which campaigns on behalf of pedestrians.

“If you are hit by a car at 35 mph your chance of survival is 50%. If you are hit by a car at 20 mph your chance of survival leaps to 97%.

"Living on a street with fast-moving traffic can be intimidating. At 20 mph, drivers can make eye contact with pedestrians and react in time, giving people the confidence to enjoy their streets.”

A 20 mph speed limit would also get more people walking and create more social streets, cut pollution from exhaust fumes, smooth traffic flow by reducing stop-start driving and reduce traffic noise.
