High speed trains started to run on the Zhengzhou-Wuhan line in China on Friday 28 September 2012.

The new line more than halves the journey time between the two cities, to two hours, down from four and a half hours, and also creates a new north-south corridor in China’s high speed rail network.

Construction began four years ago on the 330 mile line which was designed for speeds of up to 215 mph.

The £9.5 billion investment means that the new line will be used by 24 pairs of trains every day.
It is part of the 1,500 mile Beijing-Guangzhou line, which is expected to open by the end of the year.

Wuhan will soon be the junction of the north-south Beijing-Guangzhou line and the east-west Shanghai-Chengdu line. By 2020, China will have 10,000 miles of high speed line.
