Leaflets urging the Government to cut road building were handed out to thousands of people on the anti-cuts marches in London, Glasgow and Belfast, organised by the Trades Union Council on Saturday 20 October 2012.

Campaigners say the Government should cut the £100 million earmarked for the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road.

At a time when the Government claims it is short of money, Chancellor George Osborne actually wants to spend £20 billion on hundreds of discredited road projects.

The first and worst of the schemes is the Bexhill-Hastings road which will destroy the beautiful Combe Haven Valley, which was where part of the 1066 Battle of Hastings took place.

The anti-roads campaigners are promising to join a second Battle of Hastings to resist the start of construction of the road in January 2013.

Railfuture and others believe that much more could have been done to upgrade the railways in the area to provide an alternative way to travel.

It was also suggested that a new station could have been built at Glyne Gap, but while the road has been approved the station plan is being subjected to yet another “study”.

The link road does not adequately cater for pedestrians, cyclists, bus users or college students.
