Glasgow Queen Street station showing the tunnel at the far end of the station

Rail passengers in Glasgow face major disruption later this month as part of a project to introduce faster and longer trains.

The main tunnel from Glasgow Queen Street tunnel will be closed for 20 weeks, starting from Sunday 20 March 2016.

The station’s full service will not return until Monday 8 August 2016.

New timetables have been drawn up to allow passengers to use either the low-level services at Glasgow Queen Street or alternatives from nearby Glasgow Central station.

Passengers who normally use the Glasgow-Edinburgh service via Falkirk High are being advised to travel instead via Bathgate and Airdrie.

Engineers will renew 1,800 metres of concrete slab track which carries the rails through the 918 metre tunnel.

New timetables available online allow passengers to check how their journeys will be affected.  People travelling from Falkirk Grahamstown and Cumbernauld will have to change at Springburn while most other services will be diverted to Queen Street low level.

Printed timetables should be available in stations. The timetables are also available, together with an interactive map, at QST

“We are advising customers to download the timetables straight away, so they can plan how and when they will travel for the duration of the work,” said Jacqueline Taggart of ScotRail Alliance.

“We are doing everything we can to alert customers to the change. From this week we have got staff at key stations giving out handy, pocket-sized leaflets with loads of information about key route changes.”
