North East Branch

The North East branch covers the unitary authorities of County Durham, Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Nothumberland, Redcar & Cleveland, and Stockton-on-Tees, and the Metropolitan Districts of Gateshead, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, and Sunderland.

Railfuture have launched a Northern Powerhouse campaign for improved services that can be achieved now within current constraints, and that can be achieved in future through a coordinated investment programme, to turn the great Northern cities of Liverpool, Preston, Manchester, Sheffield, Bradford, Leeds and Hull into a single strategic economic entity linked by a fast high capacity rail network to realise the economic potential of the region as a global powerhouse.

Specific local campaigns include:
  • Reopening the Leamside line for both passengers and freight
  • Improved rail services throughout the area
  • Introduction of passenger services on the Ashington Blyth and Tyne line, supporting SENRUG.
The branch also supports the work being undertaken in our region by the AVR (Aln Valley Railway), Weardale Railway, Campaign for Borders Rail and the Wensleydale Railway.
